A very good eight volume set in the original full leather binding. 12mo. 17.5cm x 10.5cm x 3.0cm. Speckled calf covered boards, with just light wear to edges and corners. Clean boards, just a few small blemishes or sunning. Hinges carefully strengthened. Spines with 5 raised bands, bright gilt decorated compartments and contrasting red leather title labels and dark green leather volume numbers. Engraved armorial bookplate to verso of the front board of 7 of the 8 volumes: "Thomas Kington Esqr. Charlton House" , engraved by 'Johnson fc.' . All 8 volumes with printed label to front endpaper: "Balgowan." Volume 1 with previous owner's details in a contemporary hand to top of front endpaper: "Thomas Laurence Kington, Manilla Hall, April 30, 1859." Clear English text and illustrations throughout. Just a little intermittent light foxing. N20531 . ** "Thomas Laurence Kington-Oliphant, 11th of Gask was born on 16 May 1831 at Charlton House, Wraxall, Somerset, England. He was the son of Thomas Kington and Margaret Oliphant. He married Frances Dorothy Jebb, daughter of Samuel Henry Jebb and Frances Straw, in 1856 at Firbeck Hall, Yorkshire, England. He died on 8 July 1902 at age 71 at Bournemouth, Hampshire, England, without issue. He was given the name of Thomas Laurence Kington at birth.1 He graduated from Oxford University, with a Master of Arts. He was a barrister. He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries. He held the office of Justice of the Peace.
