Early issue variant in publisher's rust-red cloth with two leaves of SPCK adverts at rear. pp.126/[4pp.] 6.0" x 4.0" x 0.5". Boards darkened. Gilt title to spine. Original yellow endpapers, lightly soiled. Gift inscription to front free-endpaper (with recipients name erased): Whittaker Lane Sunday School Class VI. Conduct & Lessons. Christmas 1885." Illustrated with 4 full-page engravings (including frontis). Binding sound and hinges secure. VG. ** Samuel Speare was born in Rickinghall, Suffolk on 15th January 1853. He was the second child of a poor family and had eight siblings. Samuel became a missionary, spending five years in Zanzibar before returning to England to study for the priesthood. Sadly he died before he could realise his ambition. This book was first compiled in 1876 from letters written by and about Samuel Speare. The original editor was Revd. Thomas Wilkinson then curate of Rickinghall Superior and later Bishop of Zululand.
