His works influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire Naturelle during his lifetime; with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death. Ernst Mayr wrote that: "Truly, Buffon was the father of all thought in natural history in the second half of the 18th century". *** "Achille Joseph Comte, born on September 29, 1802 In Grenoble ( Isere ) and died in17 January 1866 In Nantes. He was a French doctor, professor of natural history, zoologist and physiologist. He studied medicine at the Faculty of Medicine in Paris , became an internist and frequented the largest Parisian hospitals. Recruited by Jean Cruveilhier , he is one of the founding members of the Societe Anatomique de Paris . However, he abandoned the medical path after defending his thesis to hold a post of professor of natural sciences at the Royal College Charlemagne . For several years he was president of the Society of Writers and a member of many learned societies. Until the Revolution of 1848 , he was head of the Office of the "Scholarly Companies and Medical Affairs" at the Ministry of Education. Forced to leave this position but later recognized for his talents in his pedagogical activities, he was appointed director of the Preparatory School for Higher Education in Nantes during the Second Empire . He married Aglae de Bouconville , the widow of the playwright Jean-Louis Laya , who himself published several plays but also a Natural History told to the youth, or Expose of the instincts and manners of animals, preceded by a note on The human races. **** "Jean Victor Adam (1801–1867) was a French painter and lithographer. Adam was born in Paris in 1801, the son of Jean Adam, an engraver. He studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1814-18, and also in the ateliers of Meynier and Régnault. In 1819 he exhibited Herminia succouring Tancred. He was almost immediately afterwards employed to paint various subjects for the Museum at Versailles, including The Entry of the French into Mainz, The Battle of Varroux, The Taking of Menin, The Battle of Castiglione, The Passage of the Cluse, The Battle of Montebello and The Capitulation of Meiningen the last three in collaboration with Jean Alaux.
